The buildings at Shrewsbury Flaxmill include the oldest surviving iron framed building in the world. Unused and in a state of disrepair, the site presents significant conservation challenges. Regeneration proposals include several listed buildings to create a mixed use development. We completed the design of the site energy strategy to maximise the contribution by renewable energy technologies in 2010. The project later received listed building consent and has been successful in gaining support by funding bodies including the Heritage Lottery Fund.
E3 worked to unlock the potential of the buildings by creating simple, sustainable solutions that are sympathetic to the historic fabric whilst being accessible and flexible for future changes of use. Our work includes a new substation and electrical infrastructure throughout the masterplan area.
The development now provides 4 floors of commercial office space, a ground floor museum and café in the Main Mill and Kiln buildings.
