The buildings at Shrewsbury Flax Mill include the oldest surviving iron framed building in the world. Unused and in a state of disrepair, the site presents a significant conservation challenge. Proposals include a regeneration of the whole site which includes a number of listed buildings to create a mixed use development.
In 2010 we completed the design of the site energy strategy to maximise the contribution by renewable energy technologies. The project has now received listed building consent, and has been successful in gaining support by funding bodies including the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The scheme is being delivered in phases, starting with structural and envelope repairs and with the M&E fit out due to begin in 2020. This will provide four floors of commercial space, a ground floor museum and café in the Main Mill and Kiln buildings.
