The project involved a complete remodelling and refurbishment of the College’s existing gymnasium, a listed building, which was historically a prison. A new mezzanine structure was introduced to create a ground floor fitness suite, and two exercise studios on the first floor. The building also included a new Juice Bar and Reception. Careful detailing was required to work sensitively with the existing fabric of the listed building.
The Fitness Suite and Bike Spin Studio are heated and cooled using an air source heat pump and ventilated using heat recovery mechanical ventilation air handling units. Other spaces are naturally ventilated and heated using radiators.
Lighting in the Fitness Studio comprises LED’s within a high contrast optic which was selected to light the floor and equipment and to limit any lighting on the ceiling. On the first floor the lighting is suspended within the barrel-vaults, providing both direct and indirect lighting via the linear elements with flood spots to enhance the general lighting. An integrated AV system is included to fitness machines and also the fitness studios on the first floor.
