Constructing Excellence in Wales Award 2015 “Sustainability Award-Our Legacy” – Highly Commended
The existing visitor centre at Coed y Brenin was built in 2005 and has proved to be hugely popular, in particular, for mountain biking. As a result, the facilities were nearly doubled in size to provide additional learning and retail accommodation.
The remote site has incoming mains electricity, but has independent water and sewage treatment services. A biomass boiler is the primary heating source for the existing building which has been extended to serve both buildings.
The scheme achieved a BREEAM “Excellent” for the design-stage assessments.
